Dr Mark Barrett, Principal Research Fellow - UCL, Bartlett School of Graduate Studies

Mark Barrett has a degree in Physics and Philosophy and a PhD in energy modelling. He has thirty years experience modelling energy demand and supply systems, and transport systems in terms of energy flows, costs and atmospheric emissions. He has developed scenarios of energy and emissions in European countries, and the transport (surface and aviation) and electricity sectors. He has used models to predict energy demand and supply, and the benefit and economic cost of alternative policies to reduce emissions, including energy efficiency and renewable energy, as well as pollution abatement measures. He has applied models of electricity demand and supply to national systems and to international trade. Many of these models incorporate optimisation techniques for finding least cost solutions that meet environmental and other criteria. He has also worked on power station emissions and health.

Dr Barrett has worked at both the international level and at the national and regional level in the UK, Europe and Asia. He has worked for clients including Universities, the European Commission, the European Environment Agency, UK Government departments, the Japan Clean Air Programme, local authorities, private companies and consultancies, and non-governmental and environmental organisations.

He is now a Principal Research Fellow with the Bartlett School of Graduate Studies at University College London. Previously, he has worked for the Building Research Establishment, the Open University, Earth Resources Research and as an independent consultant. He is a Director of his own company, Sustainable Environment Consultants.
