John Owen obtained his first degree in Chemistry from Imperial College, London, where he also studied for his Ph.D. in Organic Electro-optic Crystals under the late E.A.D. White. He then worked on Solar Energy at the Materials and Energy Research Centre in Iran until in 1979 revolution brought him back to the Wolfson Centre for Solid State Ionics in Imperial College as Wolfson Fellow working on polymer electrolytes. In 1984 he was appointed lecturer in the Department of Chemistry and Applied Chemistry at the University of Salford before joining the School of Chemistry at Southampton in 1990 where he is now a Professor of Electrochemistry and leader of the Solid State Electrochemistry Group which researches into electrode and polymer electrolyte materials for batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells and electrochromic devices.

John is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Power Sources. He chaired the Batteries and Supercapacitors symposium of the International Society of Electrochemistry meeting in 2006. Last year he gave invited lectures on nanomaterials and high throughput techniques for battery discovery at international meetings in Germany, Canada, and Australia and a series of lectures in China. He is a co-founder of Nanotecture PLC, a spin-out company of the University.

Dr Christian Rosenkranz is in charge of Global Business Development & EU Governmental Affairs for the Joint Venture Johnson Controls – Saft. The joint venture was been established in January 2006 as an entity for the development, production and sales of advanced battery technology (NiMH and Li-Ion) for hybrid- and electric vehicles.

Prior to this position Dr Rosenkranz was responsible for establishing and managing a battery system integration centre in Hannover, Germany to serve the European development projects in the field of hybrid and electric vehicle - battery systems.

In his industry career Dr Rosenkranz held several positions in the field of marketing, project management, research and development. He has 11 years of industry experience.

Christian Rosenkranz has a PhD in chemistry with a dissertation and thesis in electro chemistry and has studied in Hannover and London Imperial College. He will be representing EUROBAT. EUROBAT is the unified voice of the European automotive and industrial battery industry based in Brussels, Belgium.

Nick has worked closely with business planning functions, providing strategy guidance and market development support throughout his career. In his previous role he was Product Planning Director at TRW with global responsibility for their £3 billion automotive steering business providing strategy guidance for their electric steering products. Prior to this Nick was responsible for leading Lucas/TRW’s developments in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems technologies including ACC and Lane Departure Warning and was instrumental in setting up a JV company with Thales for 77 GHz radar sensor development and production.
Nick has 13 years of automotive experience preceded by 23 years in Aerospace and Defence at British Aerospace and Lucas. As well as holding senior management positions in these corporations, Nick has been MD of EMM Computers, a technology start up company which exceeded $ 1 million turnover in its first year of operation.
Since joining Frost & Sullivan in 2004 Nick has been working closely with senior executives in the automotive domain developing their business and product strategy.
